The most revealing number from Cardiff was 41 per cent.
That was Arsenal’s possession share. Manchester City completed 519 passes to Arsenal’s 352 and took 12 shots to nine. Arsenal still produced 2.19 xG to City’s 0.77 and won 3-0.
Arteta has spent years being described as Guardiola’s disciple. Yesterday looked like another stage in his separation from him.
Arsenal did not need ownership of the ball to own the match.
City tried to build in Maresca’s early 3-1-3-3 shape. Arsenal were happy to let possession move through areas where it could not hurt them. White stepped inside when Arsenal had the ball, Lewis-Skelly operated as a midfielder and Calafiori attacked from deeper positions on the opposite side. Off the ball, Arsenal protected the middle and forced City’s possession towards areas from which Haaland was difficult to access.
Haaland’s afternoon summed it up. City’s striker barely participated. City could move Arsenal from side to side but rarely moved anybody through Arsenal.
That is what 59 per cent possession can conceal.
Arsenal were much more violent with their own moments. The opening goal arrived after 24 seconds, but it contained 10 Arsenal passes. Tzolis switched the point of attack. White moved inside. Lewis-Skelly received high enough to turn Foden and then played Calafiori through City’s defensive line. There was patience in the move and aggression the second the opening appeared.
The third goal showed the same principle more directly. Lewis-Skelly found Tzolis, Tzolis attacked the space and Ødegaard ran beyond City’s midfield. Once Arsenal had broken City’s line, they kept going. Ødegaard’s dummy on Donnarumma was the finish to a move City never managed to recover from structurally.
This is where the two clubs currently look different.
Arsenal are adding players to a team that already knows its football. Bruno Guimarães could make his competitive debut and understand where Ødegaard wanted him. Tzolis could make his and produce two assists. Lewis-Skelly could change position and the mechanisms around him still function. Rice, Saka and Zubimendi began outside the starting XI. Saliba and Timber were unavailable altogether.
City are trying to build the mechanisms while changing the people.
Maresca has replaced Guardiola. Elliot Anderson arrived for a huge fee and started beside Kovacic. City are still trying to complete more midfield business. That level of churn matters because the players who once made difficult City possessions feel safe are no longer all there to carry the structure for the new ones.
The first goal exposed another concern. City had barely touched the ball before Arsenal pulled their structure apart. Later they generated possession without repeatedly finding Foden between the lines or Haaland early enough. Donnarumma had a poor afternoon too, although blaming the goalkeeper would let the players in front of him off lightly.
There are obvious limits to what one Community Shield can tell us. Maresca has only just started. City have more transfer business coming. Arsenal were sharper physically after a fuller pre-season. A 3-0 score in August does not decide anything in May.
It can show where two teams are beginning.
City looked like a club trying to discover what comes next. Arsenal looked like a club whose structure has survived long enough for new players to enter it without slowing it down.
For years Arsenal were trying to close the distance to Manchester City. Yesterday was the first time it genuinely looked as though City might be the club trying to close the distance to Arsenal.
